Privacy Policy

FocusLock ("the Extension") is a browser extension by SYNAPSE that helps you stay focused by blocking distracting websites during focus sessions, with an optional AI Study Companion. This page explains exactly what information the Extension touches, why, and what you can do about it.

What we collect

Account information. If you sign in to FocusLock with your SYNAPSE account, we collect your SYNAPSE user ID and authentication details (via Google Firebase Authentication) to link your focus session data to your account.

Focus session data. The following is synced to your SYNAPSE account so your progress is available across devices and you can review your history later:

• Your blocklist — the websites you've chosen to block during focus sessions
• Session records — start time, end time, duration, completion status, and the page or app you were focusing on (its title and URL)
• Distraction attempts — when you try to visit a blocked or distracting site during a session, the domain and number of attempts are recorded so you can see your own distraction patterns afterward
• Aggregate statistics — streaks, total focus time, and completion rate

AI Study Companion

FocusLock includes an optional AI Study Companion you can chat with during a focus session. If you use it, we additionally collect:

• Your questions — typed or spoken, sent to generate a response
• Page context — the title, URL, and any text you've highlighted on the page you're viewing when you ask a question, so the AI can answer with relevant context
• The AI's replies, and an AI-generated summary at the end of your session (topics covered, weak areas, key concepts)

This is sent to SYNAPSE's servers to generate a response using a third-party AI model (Groq, running an open-source language model), and is saved as part of your session history so you can review past conversations. You can turn the AI Study Companion off at any time in FocusLock's settings — none of the data in this section is collected while it is off.

Voice input

If you use voice input to talk to the AI Study Companion, your recording is sent to SYNAPSE's servers to convert your speech into text so the Companion can respond.

Your voice recording is used only to generate a transcript and is not retained afterward.

How we use this information

• To block distracting sites according to your preferences
• To sync your blocklist and focus stats across your devices via your SYNAPSE account
• To power the optional AI Study Companion and generate session summaries
• To show your focus history, streaks, and analytics inside the SYNAPSE app

Data storage and security

Data is stored using Google Firebase (Firestore and Authentication), the same infrastructure used by the SYNAPSE web app. The extension writes this data using your authenticated SYNAPSE session — the same account permissions that already protect your data in the web app apply here. All data is transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. AI Study Companion requests and voice transcription are processed by SYNAPSE's servers, which relay only the minimum data needed to Groq to generate a response.

Data sharing

We do not sell your data. We share data only as required to operate the features described above:

• Google Firebase — hosting, database, and authentication
• Groq — processes your AI Study Companion questions and voice recordings solely to generate a response; not used for any other purpose

Your choices

You can delete your focus session history, AI Study Companion conversations, and blocklist at any time from your SYNAPSE account settings. Turning off the AI Study Companion stops all AI-related data collection going forward. Uninstalling the extension stops all local data collection. Deleting your SYNAPSE account removes your synced FocusLock data.
